Its a pretty extensive article, but to sum it up, AMD and ATIC of Abu Dhabi are creating a new semi conductor company to fill the gap that has been left by various companies leaving the semi conductor market, because of the complexity and cost of doing business. IBM Solid State Performance Record

A very long story short, Intel has been developing solid state hard drive technology and have managed a 250% increase in overall performance above current tech. With figures of transferring data at a sustained rate of over one million Input/Output per second and with a response time of under one millisecond.
